Selection of recent works by Ghome, French artist resident in Hong Kong, “In the pink” is a story of body and soul confronted to our global environment. It’s about pain, about healing, and definitely about life.

 Ghome uses mainly oil on canvas with mixed media, creating original and surprising techniques, that enhance, with a vibrant « palette », the powerful statement about our humanity.

 Being “in the pink” is to be in perfect condition, especially of health. In the 16th century, the meaning was “the very pinnacle of something”, but not necessary limited to health.

 “Why, I am the very pinke of curtesie”, Mercurio, in Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare, 1597.

 “Of all the picturesque abominations in the world, commend me to Fondi. It is the very pink of hideousness and squalid misery”, Dickens, letters, 1845.

 Why pink has been chosen to epitomise the pinnacle of quality is supposed to do with the Dianthus flower, many varieties of which are called Pinks.

 « In the pink » is the first exhibition of paintings organized in PRAYA ONE, a work space dedicated to creativity, innovation and contemporary art, located in the shipyard of Cheung Chau Island.

I came to Cheung Chau in 1976 and it has been my home ever since, and I married a local girl in 1987.  Throughout these years I have found sauntering in the streets to walking in its countryside the combination of vistas inspirational, the chaotic sense of order, shops, signs and streets, crowdedness and isolation. The abandoned and reclaimed hastily put together in contrast to the arranged.   All co-existing are within the social network of the place.

On the other hand the countryside entangled and lush formed by the strong south winds that one gets on this island.  Microcosm’s of nature from bugs to birds, this in contrast to the open view of the sea and the constant changes of light, a complimentary within the context of change.  These elements have entered my paintings in one form or another in my understanding of the place.  I don’t depict the place but I depict my feeling about the place.

In the last 10 years have been working 3 days a week in Zhu Hai, Guangdong.  So what I have gained in my making art here, I have extended to other areas in the depiction of place.

長洲的櫻花顏色呈鮮桃紅色，是台灣「山櫻」品種，在每年新春期間盛開，至三月底完結。
